When it comes to your beauty routine, homemade treatments have the added benefit of giving you peace of mind because you know exactly what’s in them. When you make your own products, you can ensure that they’re healthy, natural, and free of chemicals, added fillers, and all that other junk!
Some of the easiest, most useful beautifiers you can make yourself - from items you probably already have in your kitchen - are facial masks! These concoctions are simple to make, effective, and you can be confident knowing that only good stuff is going on your precious skin.
Luxury doesn’t have to cost a fortune when you give yourself spa treatments at home! (Note: it’s always best to try new products on a small area of your inner forearm before applying them your face, in the event of a reaction.)

XoJane says that it’s best to start by rinsing your face with warm water. Then, mix the following in these rough measurements:
- 1/2 Tbsp baking soda
- 1 Tbsp water
Combine to form a thick paste, then slather on to your skin. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes (the article suggests 10 minutes for oily skin, less time for normal or dry), and reapply no more than once a week to avoid irritation. The baking soda kills bacteria and polishes your skin when you massage it on and wipe it off. Just make sure to use a fresh box, not the one that’s been absorbing odors in your fridge or cleaning cabinet.
3. Invigorating Coffee Mask
Your coffee energizes you in the morning, but did you know it can also energize your face? One Green Planet shares a facial mask recipe that’ll have your coffee grounds doing double-duty:
- 4 Tbsp oil (coconut, olive, or other)
- 6 Tbsp finely ground coffee (either dry or brewed works)
- Optional: a few drops of tea tree or essential oil
Blend ingredients and gently scrub onto your face. The fine grounds will buff away flakes, while caffeine works its magic by detoxifying and reducing redness. Bonus: use this as a body scrub to help banish cellulite!
